Game of Thrones is finished, but A Song of Ice and Fire is supposedly continuing. George RR Martin has confirmed work on a new book, The Winds of Winter, but it is yet to be released. Will The Winds of Winter be Martin’s final book, or are there more to be expected after?
The first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones, was released in 1996, with the second book, A Clash of Kings, following shortly after in 1998.
After this, Martin completed the third book in very quick succession, with A Storm of Swords coming out in 2000.
However, A Storm of Swords marked the last quick release novel, as the fourth book, A Feast for Crows, came out in 2005.
This was followed by A Dance with Dragons, which came out in 2011, and sadly in 2020 no sixth book has arrived.
The sixth book, The Winds of Winter, will take place further north than any of the previous book, and the Others will make appearances.
According to Martin, the fifth book, A Dance with Dragons, did not have as much story as expected, meaning these storylines will likely be resolved at the beginning of the sixth book.
Martin also revealed in an interview that a Victarion Greyjoy chapter will begin give minutes after the end of A Dance with Dragons, and take place on the eve of Ironborn’s arrival in Slaver’s Bay, while another sample chapter from Martin showed Arianne Martell heading to Griffin’s Roost with a young man called Aegon VI Targaryen.
Speaking at a book fair in 2016, Martin said this book would be far darker than those previously.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, he said: “I’ve been telling you for 20 years that winter was coming.
“Winter is the time when things die, and cold and ice and darkness fill the world, so this is not going to be the happy feel-good that people may be hoping for.
“Some of the characters [are] in very dark places….
“Things get worse before they get better, so things are getting worse for a lot of people.”
Will The Winds of Winter be the final book from Martin?
The answer to that is a definite no, as he has also announced the series will have seven novels, with the final one being A Dream of Spring.
With regards of A Dream of Spring, Martin has said he is only firm about ending the series with the seventh novel “until I decide not to be firm,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
Even if Martin chooses The Winds of Winter will be his end, there are some more books coming out anyway.
One of these is the second part of his Fire and Blood book, which tells the story of the Targaryen family 300 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.
This is important, as it will be the basis of the new HBO series, House of the Dragon, which is currently in development.
With Game of Thrones, the writers of the series ended up overtaking him with regards narrative for the TV show, and he will likely not want this to happen again.
As a result, Martin will likely be far quicker on the draw in terms of getting this book out.
He will also be writing further short stories in the Dunk & Egg series, with two expected to come in the future.
These will be called The She-Wolves and The Village Hero, and it is not clear at present in what order these will come by.
One thing is for sure, there are plenty of stories in George RR Martin yet.
