Manchester United need an attacking playmaker, as it’s the one area where Solskjaer’s squad is light, according to Higginbotham.
The former defender believes United need to emulate rivals Manchester City in attracting a player with similar vision to Kevin De Bruyne or David Silva.
His comments came during United’s pre-season friendly against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup.
Solskjaer’s men won the match 1-0 after a second-half goal from 17-year-old Mason Greenwood.
“Inter sitting very deep and this is when @ManUtd can get frustrated,” tweeted Higginbotham.
“Really miss a Silva, De Bruyne type player that can pick the pass through a very congested space.
“Mata closest to this type for United.”
Juan Mata didn’t start the match for United, but came on for the final 28 minutes of the game.
Another midfielder, Paul Pogba, recorded the most assists for United last season, with nine; enough to finish eighth in the Premier League’s top assists table.
United have been linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, which could help to address their lack of creativity from the centre..
The Portuguese international made 33 appearances for Sporting last season, producing 13 assists, and scoring 20 goals.
Solskjaer is reportedly preparing a £70m bid for the midfielder, as they need reinforcements in the middle of the park.
United moved into third in the International Champions Cup table after beating Inter Milan.
They created a host of chances, and should’ve won the match by a larger margin, in truth.
Luke Shaw had a long-range shot narrowly miss the target, while veteran Nemanja Matic hit the post with a bullet header shortly after half-time.
But Solskjaer had to wait until the 76th minute for youngster Mason Greenwood to score the winner – a left-footed drive that went through a big crowd in the box.
United’s next match is against Tottenham on Thursday July 25, in Shanghai.
