Mouse problems…

13:57: Having trouble with my wireless mouse today folks. Early excuse? Yep. But I suppose that’s what you deserve when you pinch it from your girlfriend’s father.

So I obviously take no responsibility for anything that’s formatted wrong in this blog…

Twitter round-up

Matt: Here we go first competitive game of the season strong side out today as I expected to see let’s kick the season off with a trophy.

Tommy: Looks like Klopp has gone for pace of Gomez at the back to also help cover Trent. Love Matip but we look invincible with the Gomez and VVD partnership.

Thomas: Gomez > Matip? Interesting but he’s still been excellent with VVD, Wiji over Keita then, would say it’s cause of fitness but better for structure in the midfield as well, COME ON YOU REDS.

Liverpool XI

13:50: Liverpool draw first blood by announcing their starting XI first… Just imagine if that was considered a real win.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Origi, Salah, Firmino.

Subs: Mignolet, Lovren, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lallana, Shaqiri, Matip.

Ey up!

13:45: We’ve got a little needle in this one today.

I was worried we’d lost managerial rivalries in the Premier League after chief instigators Jose Mourinho, Sam Allardyce, Arsene Wenger and Tony Pulis left.

But Pep Guardiola isn’t too happy with Jurgen Klopp’s latest comments.

The Liverpool boss said: “People talk about it like, ‘now another £300million or £200m’.

“There are maybe only two clubs in the world – it looks in the moment like Barcelona and (Real) Madrid can do the same – (Manchester) City and Paris St Germain that can do it every year.”

But Pep didn’t agree.

The City manager said: “Of course it bothers me because it’s not true that we spend £200m in every transfer market. So it’s Liverpool – you’ll never walk alone – so it’s not a small team. It’s Liverpool.”

Afternoon…

13:40: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the FA Community Shield.

I still know it as the Charity Shield – despite the official name change in 2002. God I feel old.

Whatever it’s called – it’s worth winning and should provide one of these sides with a good psychological boost ahead of the 2019/2020 campaign.

The two teams’ neck-and-neck title race last season was decided by the finest of margins, so any chance to gain an early advantage may help, especially Liverpool who lost just one match and finished with a record points tally for runners-up.

We’ll find out if Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have gone full throttle with their selections any moment now. Standby…

LIVERPOOL vs MANCHESTER CITY

Forward Sadio Mane is Liverpool’s only absentee for the Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley.

The Senegal international does not rejoin the squad until Monday after an extended break, having been involved in the Africa Cup of Nations final last month.

Fellow forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino only returned to training this week after their international involvement, so are likely to have reduced roles, but Brazil goalkeeper Alisson is expected to start.

City are without midfielder Fernandinho, who is still to return to training after international duty with Brazil.

The likes of Ederson, Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi and Riyad Mahrez are only just back for pre-season and are unlikely to start.

Claudio Bravo is set to start in goal and record signing Rodri should also play, but defender Aymeric Laporte is doubtful after a knock and left-back Benjamin Mendy (knee) is unlikely to feature.
